About the Law Clinic
The Law Clinic is a module on the degree programme for law students. It provides a free legal service to staff and students of Sheffield Hallam University and members of the public, who are in need of legal advice or assistance.
There is no charge for the service. Any expenses incurred on behalf of a client (such as court fees) are paid by that client. Clients are advised before committing themselves to any action. The advice and assistance is free.
The Law Clinic is run by students from the Faculty of Development and Society taking law degrees, under the supervision of academic staff who are qualified solicitors or barristers.
Areas of law
The Law Clinic welcomes any legal enquiry, although it is unable to accept instructions from any person who wishes to pursue a claim against a university, or Sheffield Hallam University Governors, employees or students.
The types of cases that the Law Clinic is likely to deal with include, but are not limited to, personal injury, housing, holiday, consumer, and small claims hearings.
We advise clients whether their case can be taken up. Where this is not possible, clients are advised of what steps to take next, including signposting to other appropriate agencies.
The main aims of the Law Clinic are to provide practical legal experience for law students and to offer a reliable service to those with legal difficulties. The Law Clinic reserves the right, however, to decline to take on cases that do not complement the educational aims of the scheme.
Standards and confidentiality
The Law Clinic is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the independent regulatory body of the Law Society. Clients can be assured that they will receive an independent and professional service in the same way as from any other practising solicitor. The Law Clinic's SRA number is 00202011.
The Law Clinic has been awarded the Legal Services Commission Quality Mark.
All advice, assistance and representation is given in the strictest confidence.
Community Legal Service Quality Mark
The Quality Mark is awarded by the Community Legal Service (CLS) for the provision of quality legal service. The Community Legal Service has agreed that the Law Clinic meets the requirements for the CLS Quality Mark - General Help Standard.
