How and when to apply for accommodation

You can only apply online for accommodation when you have been made an offer of a place to study here for 2012/13 and you have accepted this offer. This means

• you have accepted a conditional offer as your firm choice
• you have accepted a conditional offer as your insurance choice
• you have accepted an unconditional offer as your firm choice
• you have accepted an unconditional offer as your insurance choice
• you are a returning student
• you have applied previously and have a deferred place

If you change your offer status from insurance to first choice you need to contact us.

Late applications and those which are a result of clearing or insurance choices cannot be guaranteed allocation where demand is high. In exceptional circumstances applications will be referred to our expertly organised househunting events .

Application process

The application process differs depending on which student category you are. Before you apply you should check which category applies to you. Selecting the incorrect category may result in delays to your application and any subsequent allocation of accommodation. Choose from the list below

• September entry - undergraduate UK and international students

  If you are a new undergraduate student starting University in September, you can apply for accommodation online from 3 January 2012.

  If you are a current student and you want to apply for halls in either your second, third or fourth year, you can apply for accommodation online from 29 November 2011.

  New UK students - if you have an unconditional offer of study and you have made Sheffield Hallam University your firm choice, you will be made an offer of accommodation by post from summer 2012. However applications from students with a conditional offer of study will be held until confirmation from UCAS has been received and University academic conditions have been met. Once your status has changed through UCAS to an unconditional firm and you meet the academic requirements for the course, you will be offered accommodation.

  New EU international students - unconditional firm students will be made an offer of accommodation from summer 2012 onwards. Conditional firm applications will be held until confirmation has been received from UCAS and all the University academic conditions have been met. When your status has changed to unconditional firm and you meet the academic requirements for the course and obtained a visa (if applicable), then you will be offered accommodation.

• September entry - postgraduate UK and international students

  Applying for halls of residence
  If you are a new postgraduate student starting University in September, you can apply for accommodation online from 3 January 2012.

  If you are a current student and you want to apply for halls in either your second, third or fourth year, you can apply for accommodation online from 29 November 2011.

  Applying for private sector accommodation
  We recognise that mature students may not want to live in a hall with undergraduate students. You may prefer to choose to live in a flat or bedsit where you have your own cooking facilities, in one of our quieter residences, or in a private sector house with your partner or family. We have a register of private sector accommodation to suit all tastes or you can apply for househunting events.

• January entry - undergraduate UK and international students

  There are a number of places available if you are starting University in the New Year which will be offered on a first come, first served basis. You can apply for accommodation online.

  You will be taking over a room mid-term until the end of the contract period shown on your online application – usually until June/July. If you require accommodation for longer – as you may not be able to stay in the residence over the summer period – we will help you find suitable accommodation for your needs.

  We cannot guarantee places within our accommodation for students of the same type – such as nursing students, postgraduate or mature students.

• January entry - postgraduate UK and international students

  There are a number of places available if you are starting University in the New Year which will be offered on a first come, first served basis. You can apply online for accommodation.

  You will be taking over a room mid-term until the end of the contract period shown on your online application - usually until June/July. If you require accommodation for longer - as you may not be able to stay in the residence over the summer period - we will help you find suitable accommodation for your needs.

• Non Sheffield Hallam University students

  If you are a non Sheffield Hallam University student and you want to apply for one of our residences, email us at accommodation@shu.ac.uk with your full name, gender, correspondence address with postcode, your date of birth, campus and course.

  We need this information in order to issue you with an ID number so you can apply online. Failure to provide this information will delay your application. Once you have your ID number you can apply online.
