Information for landlords
We have an online database of registered private sector properties. If you have a property that you think would be suitable for our students (or staff) and you would like to register it, further information is below.
Private sector properties
Entire properties – either shared and/or self contained – for rent by groups or on a per room basis. These include houses, flats, apartments and bedsits. View our database of properties.
Private halls of residence
We class any property with over 25 rooms as a hall of residence. There is a separate private halls of residence registration form (PDF 255KB). Any hall of residence where we do not allocate 100% of the bed spaces can register on our private sector database.
Homestay properties
We have a separate database for homestay properties. These include accommodation where the landlord lives at the property – such as host families, lodgings, spare rooms for rent, bed and breakfasts and guest houses.
Requirements
Properties must meet all the relevant legal and local authority standards.
If you need any further information on the licenses and certificates your property should hold, please contact Private Housing Standards team (contact details below) at Sheffield City Council. All properties are checked with this team prior to registration with Sheffield Hallam University.
Please ensure that you have up to date gas safe and electrical safety certificates, smoke detectors, fire blankets and carbon monoxide detectors for all of your properties.

Registration renewals
Approximately one month before a registration is about to expire, you'll receive an automated letter stating which property is about to expire and the expiry date. If you wish to re-register the property, please complete a new registration form and return it to Accommodation Services with the relevant payment (details below).
Payment
The cost for each type of property registration is included on the registration form. The payment will register the property with the University for one year from the date it's added to the database. Accommodation Services can only accept payment by the following methods.
- Cash – you can pay in cash at the Accommodation Services office at the address below. We wouldn't advise putting cash payments in the post.
- Credit/debit card – all card payments can be completed on the downloadable card mandate form and returned with registration forms to Accommodation Services or by phone 0114 225 4504/5. Please do not return payments forms by email.

Househunt details for landlords
Registered landlords with vacancies in September can apply for appointment viewings on our annual househunting week.
