Prospective students

We have accommodation types to suit all our students, so you will find a home that meets your personal needs.

We offer five types of accommodation

  1. University owned residence with a catering package (Woodville Hall)
  2. University managed residences (Bramall Court and Charlotte Court)
  3. University partnership residences
  4. Private sector housing
  5. Homestays or accommodation with a family

All university allocated residences (1, 2 and 3 above) are furnished with standard bedroom furniture unless otherwise stated. This includes a bed, wardrobe, a desk or workstation and a chair. Some bedrooms have a wash basin. Not all rooms have an en suite, these facilities do cost extra.

You can buy very reasonably priced bedding and kitchen utensils and crockery in Sheffield if you do not want to bring this with you.
All allocated residences enforce a strict non-smoking policy, in line with the University's non-smoking policy.

See the location of all our residences on our location map.

If you would like to view some our owned, managed or partnership residence, visit our open days - where you will get a taste of what life is like living in university accommodation. If you cannot make one of our open days, contact us and we will put you in touch with the accommodation manager or landlord of the property you would like to visit to arrange a convenient time to view the property.

First semester study students

We are unable to offer accommodation in our owned, managed or partnership residences if you're only undertaking first semester study. But we can give you help and advice in seeking private sector accommodation.

When you apply online for accommodation, choose 'private sector housing' as your first and second choice and indicate clearly in the notes section that you're a first semester student.

You will then be sent information on how to book onto our househunting week.

There are many different types of accommodation available in Sheffield to suit all requirements.

We recognise that as a mature or postgraduate student you may not want to live in a hall of residence with undergraduate students. You may prefer to live in a bedsit where you have your own cooking facilities in one of our quieter residences, or live in a private sector house with your partner or family.

Should you choose to live in private sector accommodation you should still apply on line.

Whatever your needs, our experience and knowledge enable us to offer a free service that addresses your specific needs and ensures that you find the most suitable accommodation.

Arriving in Sheffield

  • If you have received confirmation of University accommodation.
You must complete the SHU Start induction programme; instructions will be supplied in your offer of accommodation pack. By completing this induction you will have access to important information about health and wellbeing whilst living in Sheffield, additional international student related information and most importantly, you will be provided with

    • specific information on the residence you have been offered
    • important contact names and numbers for your residence
    • arrival information
    • key collection procedures.

You will be asked to provide the date and time you intend to arrive at your accommodation and what to do if you need to make other arrangements.

Please make a note of the contact telephone number(s) of your landlord - these will be important if your flight is delayed and you are not able to arrive at the time you had planned.

If your journey is delayed for any reason, you should immediately contact the landlord and inform them of your re-scheduled arrival time.

  • If you have not applied for University accommodation and have nowhere to live.
Students are advised to book themselves into a local hotel for their first night's accommodation and then visit Accommodation Services office where staff will be able to offer advice and assist students to find suitable accommodation.
