Don't forget your coathangers
Did you know that the number one thing students forget to bring to university is coathangers? Below we have some hints on making the most of your first few weeks - including what to pack if you're moving into student accommodation, as well as a list of some other things to remember. Plus, what to expect from freshers' week.
You'll have just received, or will soon be receiving, our Starting at Sheffield Hallam guide. It contains essential documents plus all you need to know about what to do in your first few weeks, including tips on health, money, and the some of the best things to do in Sheffield.
In the meantime, check out our videos about being a student at Sheffield Hallam.
If, among all the excitement about starting uni, you're also feeling a little nervous, don't worry - you'll be supported every step of the way at Sheffield Hallam. See some of the support we offer.
1. Photos of your friends and family - an instant way to personalise your room.
2. Kitchen equipment - you'll need crockery like bowls, plates and mugs. Don't bother buying big things like toasters and kettles - it's best to wait until you arrive, in case everyone you're sharing with has brought them as well (there's only so much toast you can eat). Instead, start saving now for your first shopping trip with your new flatmates or neighbours.
3. Laptop and USB stick - Our learning centres are packed with computers, but if you want to work from home you may want to invest in a laptop, USB stick and printer. Make sure you register and security mark your stuff - for example with Immobilise and SmartWater.
4. Bedding - you'll need to bring your own bedding, duvet and towels so it may be worth investing in some new ones.
5. Coathangers and doorstop - Liberate a few coathangers from your wardrobe at home to bring with you.
6. Boring-but-necessaries - If you want to watch live TV - whether through a telly or laptop - you need a licence! If you're living in an allocated hall of residence you need to organise contents insurance. Companies such as Cover 4 Students - they can also arrange additional cover for any individual expensive items or things not covered by your standard halls insurance.
And don’t forget an alarm clock for those early morning lectures!
Freshers' week has loads of events that are perfect for meeting other people starting their time at Sheffield Hallam. Keep up to date with freshers' week events here and join the Facebook group here.
