An active week – and beyond

An active lifestyle is good for your health, your energy levels and your state of mind. So keep in shape, feel good and be in a good place when those exams come round.

The NHS recommends that all adults do 150 minutes of physical activity every week. You'll never have a better chance to hit that target, and have a load of fun along the way, than Get Active Week! And it won't cost you a penny.

Here are a few more handy tips to help you lead a healthy and active lifestyle – not just this week but every week.

  • Physical activity doesn't have to mean playing sport. Your 150 minutes can be made up from any activity that gets your heart rate up over the week. From tidying the house to belly dancing – and anything in between.
  • Start with something small and keep doing it on a daily basis. You'll soon get into a routine.
  • Don't waste your money on the bus – walk between City and Collegiate campuses. It can even be quicker when the traffic's bad!
  • Live your life as if escalators and lifts were never invented (starting with the Owen lift shutdown in Get Active Week)

Healthy eating tips from Chef Hallam

  • Don’t be tempted to skip breakfast. A healthy, filling breakfast means you’re less likely to snack before lunch. And when that cooked breakfast is calling, try grilling instead of frying.
  • We all know about eating our 5 a day, but you might be surprised how easy it can be. Frozen and canned fruit and veg count too, as do fruit juice and smoothies, and you can pick up fruit in all the outlets across campus.
  • Drink at least 1.2 litres of water a day to keep your brain hydrated. Drinking water can also help keep hunger at bay.
  • Look out for healthy meal options in Chef Hallam outlets across campus.
