For most of them, it was the first time they had seen each other since leaving college 46 years ago. HND Chemistry, class of 1965

'The HND Chemistry class of '65 was the first group of its kind to be run by the then Technical College – studying from 1962 to 1965 on the original Pond Street site. Over forty years later – on 14 October 2006 – the original group were reunited at the Foxhouse Inn. The black and white photograph was taken around 1964 by course member Geoff Sullivan – and recreated 41 years later at the Foxhouse. The reunion for members and partners was short of only one course member Barbara Thomas (who the group have unfortunately lost touch with).' David Lyon

BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design (Product Design) 10 year reunion, class of 1996

'Our 10 year reunion took place in Sheffield on Saturday 26 August. It was a lovely day and so good to see everyone again. Some of our group hadn't been reunited in the 10 year since graduating. We did a lot of reminiscing and laughing throughout the day which began at 1pm in Sheffield's Ha! Ha! Bar and Canteen. We enjoyed an informal buffet lunch together and managed to pose for a few group photos – our first since graduation. Later in the day we moved onto ASK restaurant for a delicious pizza before ending the evening in the City Bar. Being together in this bar had a nice sense of coming full circle as its previous incarnation was Henry's – where we had our five year reunion. We left around 11pm to go to our respective homes and hotels having had a really fantastic day.' Claire Saich (née Pestell)

BA Business Studies, class of 1975

'Despite an absence of more than 20 years for some of us, I was really pleased with the number of old friends who attended our reunion. Sixteen former class mates returned to Sheffield to enjoy an afternoon's guided tour of the University campus. This was an excellent ice-breaker and later in the evening the University's Howard Suite was an ideal location for our reunion dinner. As Stuart Green and many other returning course members recalled, we all felt instantly comfortable with the faces and the conversation coming our way. In truth, it didn't feel like a 30-year gap at all – rather that we had just stepped out of the classroom for a moment before stepping back in to rejoin our friends.' Dave Griffin

HND Business Studies, class of 1967

Chris and Judi Twigg were the hosts of a very special weekend in April 2005, marking 40 years since the first meeting between the HND Business Studies classes of '64 and '65.

'Judi and I hosted a spectacular 40th anniversary reunion at our home in Melbourne Beach, Florida with six couples attending a four day weekend. Arriving on the Thursday, our guests (from New Zealand, Spain, France and the UK) were treated to a spectacular lightning storm for several hours in the evening followed by cocktails in our screened porch watching the electrical display. The next few days involved barbecues, cocktails and pool parties, as well as a trip to the nearby Kennedy Space Center. The last day was spent in a park on the south part of our island community where we saw plenty of pelicans, egrets, ibis, and other wildlife. We were fortunate to be able to wade out waist-deep into the lagoon to observe two manatees, as big as small submarines, as they swam around us for 20 minutes; they were so close we could touch them. There are 25 of us still in touch with each other and we do hope that other HND '64-'67 friends will see this notice and contact us.' Chris and Judi Twigg

2004

BSc (Hons) Industrial Studies, class of 1997

When initially thinking of organising a reunion, we thought of going to the Alumni Office for advice. I knew from the website that they could help, and I was very pleased with the support they offered – particularly on the admin side with sending out letters and invitations as it meant there was no financial cost to me. The reunion was a great success, with 16 of us reuniting in our favourite pubs before moving into town and ending up in Hot Pants.' Daryl May

BSc (Hons) Urban Land Economics, class of 1972

'Our ULE reunion was a great success – 19 people came along, with family and friends, including our law lecturer David Bentley (now His Honour Judge Bentley QC). There were plenty of recollections of our student days and it was a chance to bring out some old photos and even exam papers. We all enjoyed the evening so much and, for a few short hours, we were all 18 again!' Jill Bungay

2001

Sheffield Students Motor Club reunion

'The Sheffield Students Motor Club thrived from around 1968 until it faded away in the late 1970s. In its heyday it was a serious motor sporting body, whose members were invited to compete in rallies of all levels around the country.

Although most members were from Sheffield University, around 10 came from the Polytechnic, and this led to intense rivalry within the club. But, what was most surprising were the achievements of the club in the national arena. Two major rallies were organised each year and up to 120 cars competed. The students managed to build state of the art rally cars and competed on equal terms with some of the country's top crews and won many awards. Some teams were competing 15 to 20 times a year. Unfortunately as costs spiralled and legislation increased the club fell into decline.

The reunion was a fabulous achievement. Around 70 people turned up at the Hallam Towers, including more than half of the Polytechnic members. These included Mick Drinkall, John Wilson, Brenda Wilson, Simon Geoghegan, Martin Rigney, Steve Downsborough and Nick Williams. After the shock of the changed hairstyles had sunk in, conversations picked up where they had broken off 30 years before. Trophies, photographs and SSMC magazines were in abundance and many old friendships were re-ignited. A central register has been formed with further reunions on the cards.

The following lunchtime saw a further gathering at the Grouse Inn at Froggat. The Grouse was an old favourite and had been used as a starting point for many of the lesser events organised by the Club. Volvos and BMWs had replaced the Mini Coopers and Anglias in the car park, but the people had changed very little.' Nick Williams
