The challenge

Getting the next generation of engineers and researchers enthused about science in schools can be a challenge. But it's crucial if companies like AstraZeneca are to secure their future and support UK PLC.

What we did

AstraZeneca teamed up with our Centre for Science Education and the Brightside Trust. Three test-bed projects of new ideas were established in partnership between the organisations and the centre, to try and spark more interest in school science.

The projects included Evolve, a fuse of continuous professional development and curriculum development, producing an online community built around a wiki that aims to inspire teachers, scientists and pupils alike. The second is the Scientists in Schools scheme, combining an online education community with the training of AstraZeneca scientists to spend time in schools.

And finally, Double Crossed which explored alternative ways of transition from primary to secondary school through cross-curricular learning in science and history. All three projects were funded by the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust, with additional support from Brightside with Scientists in Schools.

The results

The three projects have resulted in a number of positive impacts on science education, including the development of a high-quality standard setting training programme for science teachers. And as part of ongoing initiatives, the centre is working with schools across the country to ensure young people raise their aspirations and take on careers within the realm of science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects.
