  • Sheffield Hallam University has secured more than €3m from the European Union to launch NEWGENPAK, a new group which brings together experts in sustainable packaging from across Europe, with a mission to create the next generation of environmentally-friendly paper products.
  • Sheffield Hallam University has successfully gained certification to ISO 14001 for its environmental management system following audits by the British Standards Institution (BSI). This internationally recognised certification was awarded after a review of academic, research, operational and commercial activities across both of the University’s campuses.
  • The difference between how people cope with ageing and how they are treated by society in Taiwan and the UK is the subject of a major study currently being undertaken by a team from Lab4Living, an exciting collaboration between the art and design and health and social care research centres at Sheffield Hallam University.

Latest case studies

  • The Coney Green Business Centre of North East Derbyshire District Council installed a wind turbine in 2005 with a 20 kW capacity. However the turbine was only supplying 5% of the power demand, which was insufficient to offset its maintenance costs.
  • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) used to be seen as an environmental problem with associated disposal issues. As such, experts from Hallam Energy, part of our Materials and Engineering Research Institute, are looking at ways to turn MSW into a resource for power generation to minimise these problems.
  • The Dalesman Group had an established industry-facing business, but wanted to branch out into retail. They approached Design Futures to help them develop a new brand identity and a packaging design that would help them access new markets.
