Sheffield Hallam University has successfully gained certification to ISO 14001 for its environmental management system following audits by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

This internationally recognised certification was awarded after a review of academic, research, operational and commercial activities across both of the University’s campuses.

Viki Bell, Global Portfolio Manager for Sustainability at BSI presented the certificate to members of the University's environmental management system review team.

Viki said: "As an organisation, Sheffield Hallam has put in place policies using the ISO 14001 framework which take into consideration the potential environmental impacts of the University.

"Sheffield Hallam has achieved this quickly considering the size of the organisation and the breadth of initiatives across both campuses.
"We were particularly impressed by the University’s ethos of ‘practising what you teach’ which is clearly demonstrated by the link between the academic courses offered and the way the campuses are run. It's a very positive and proactive approach."

Mark Swales, director of estates and facilities at Sheffield Hallam, said: "Achieving ISO 14001 status is very important to the University as it shows that we're committed to sustainability. Our staff and students' experience is influenced by the environment that we create - and in the feeling of pride in knowing they are part of an organisation that is caring and constantly striving to make a positive contribution.

"However, this isn't the end of the process for us - it's the start of a journey. Achieving this award is the start of a three year improvement plan for environmental management at the University."

Sheffield Hallam's ISO 14001 certification acknowledges its drive to comply with regulation and legislation in the environmental field, and continually improving its performance in managing environmental impacts, including the prevention of pollution.

It also acknowledges the University's reduction in the use of resources and resulting waste and emissions, along with identifying potential cost savings and internal efficiencies.
