Biomedical

From specialist analytical techniques to molecular and biological models and assays, we have a wide range of expertise in this area.
Our biomedical research centre makes a significant contribution to our understanding of biological processes and systems, especially disease processes, as they identify new therapeutic targets.
Our work covers four key areas
- disease mechanisms
- bioanalytical science
- molecular microbiology
- pharmacology.
We also offer a number of commercial services, where we work with businesses to apply our knowledge and expertise to real business challenges, such as product development.
Our facilities
In the past three years, we’ve invested more than £1.25 million on new laboratory equipment and instruments for teaching and research. We have installed a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, a state-of-the-art SYNAPT mass spectrometer and a cell culture suite made up of five laminar flow hood and incubators.
Our facilities include
- Q-TOF-MS with electrospray and imaging MALDI options, along with LC and associated equipment for proteomic analysis
- a single-cell recording electrophysiology laboratory
- real-time PCR
- flow cytometer with cell sorter
- cell culture facilities for bacterial and mammalian cells
- a confocal microscopy suite
- a DNA microarray scanner
- a biacore facility
Our partners and clients
We have strong links with the biomedical industry, working with organisations including the NHS, Pfizer, Astra Zeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, B. Braun, Covance and Evotec. We work with them in a number of ways, from student placements and advice about curriculum design to providing consultancy and analytical services.
