Built environment

The built environment sector continues to face severe challenges in the current economic climate, but by working together with industry, we can play a vital role in its stabilisation and growth.

Sheffield Hallam has a great deal of expertise and experience in working in the construction and property industries. Our range of professional development courses and bespoke training solutions help people and businesses to improve their skills, gain qualifications and be successful.

UK buildings are responsible for approximately 50 per cent of energy use and 50 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, they account for 40 per cent of materials resource use, 40 per cent of wastes produced and 60 per cent of water consumption. So it's essential that all planning, design, construction and operations are sustainable, and that the finished product inspires and benefits occupants.

Our staff, courses and research are based on the core values of sustainability, environmentally sensitive design and profitable development. And as a leading provider of built environment education, we create resilient professionals who can best serve the needs of practice both in the UK and internationally.

We have a strong history of working with industry and a reputation for delivering practical degree programmes and work-ready graduates. We have a wealth of experience in producing innovative, vocationally relevant and professionally focused courses, and work with our industry partners to develop the next generation of property and construction professionals.

Our Department of Built Environment supports our engagement with employers, so if you're keen to find out how we could develop your workforce, provide a source of talented students and graduates, and discover how you could join our community, we'd like to hear from you.

Specialists in facilities management

In the current economic climate, with smaller budgets, a changing workforce and businesses wanting more from or even to reduce the space they have available, a strategic approach to facilities management is vital.

At Sheffield Hallam, we are experts in using space strategically. It's not just about remodelling or refitting an office, it's about people and places. We take a strategic approach to the sustainability of your organisation, the performance of your staff and, ultimately, how you can improve your bottom line.

Our Centre for Facilities Management and Development is an integral part of the Sheffield Business School. We use our facilities management experience and knowledge to support research, consultancy, and training and development. We work hard to reflect the varied environment and economically unsettled times that we live in, while providing future-proof solutions that can be applied now.
