How does clearing work?

Who is eligible?

If you have just missed out on your expected grades by only a few points, then you  may still be able to get a place on your chosen course. Please contact your original choice universities to see if they can offer you a place, you can contact Sheffield Hallam from 16 August 2012. The Clearing Hotline number and call centre opening times will be published on this web page in July.

Anyone who is not holding a place at university is eligible to apply through clearing.

What if I haven't applied yet?

If you have not already applied through the UCAS system then you can still apply to universities through clearing if they have any places available. You should call the institution of your choice and if you are made an offer you will be given advice on what you need to do next. However please deal with only one university at a time.

The way clearing works

If after your results are published, you are unsuccessful in gaining a place at your chosen universities, you will become eligible for clearing. UCAS will automatically add an 'Add Clearing choice' button to your Track 'choices' screen.

Please note: If you are a single choice applicant you will need to pay the full application fee before you can find a place in clearing.

The process

  • Vacancies are shown on the UCAS Clearing vacancy website and in The Telegraph as well as individual institution websites. You will then need to contact universities to discuss vacancies. Once you have received an offer of a place verbally or by email/letter, and you want to accept the place, enter the details of the institution and course into UCAS Track (only courses that have vacancies can be entered)
  • Applicants who do not have access to Track can phone UCAS on 0871 468 0468.
