Laurie's story
BSc (Honours) Interactive Media with Animation
'I've always wanted to work for myself, so through the Research and Innovation Office I went to a self-employment workshop. From there, I went to see specialist advisors and I applied for the Placement Year Entrepreneurship Scheme. This was a great opportunity to come into an office environment and set-up my business in providing home education materials.
'Support from the scheme included a bursary every month, and it's given me valuable knowledge about starting a business - such as how to write a business plan, network and project manage. Plus I've had regular meetings with a business advisor to go over my progress and help shape my business.
'I've also had 24/7 access to office facilities and meeting room space through the Hatchery, and I've been able to network with the other students there which has given me ideas for partnerships.
'All this has given me the passion, confidence and skills I need to become a successful businesswoman. '
