Courses developed for employability

At Sheffield Hallam, your employability is our priority. We focus on your career from day one.

Our courses are designed in partnership with employers, professional associations and practice specialists. This ensures that you graduate with the skills needed in the workplace.

We have worked with industry leading organisations and bodies including Sony, NHS, Network Rail, Cisco, SAP and Microsoft.

The close working relationships we have with industry and the professions enable us to deliver courses that provide the expertise sought by employers.

Career skills enhanced as you learn

We are experts in designing learning and assessment methods that develop the skills that employers tell us are vital for successful career progression. The development of these skills is a core feature of all our courses and includes

  • planning, organising and delivering major projects
  • presenting and communicating ideas to audiences
  • problem solving and applying creative thinking
  • working effectively in groups

In 2005, the University was named a national Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Embedding, Enhancing and Integrating Employability.

You can read the University's employability statement here.

Courses featuring real workplace experience

Employers expect new graduates to have completed some work experience or work-based activities. This is why we have the largest number of students (6,340) enrolled on placement courses in Great Britain. The University has achieved this by building strong links with industry and the public sector.

We try to embed work or professional experience into our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Depending on the type and nature of the course, the professional experience can take different forms including

  • long or short industry work placements
  • completing assessed projects with external companies
  • delivering professionally run events, exhibitions or services, which can be open to the public
  • completing case studies, assignments or projects based on real life scenarios
  • work-based learning - this enables people in employment to base projects on their workplace, ensuring their learning is directly relevant to their career
  • using guest speakers from leading organisations to give you the latest insights and guidance into a profession
  • work experience schemes
  • our Placement Year Entrepreneurship Scheme

Developing employability outside of your course

To further develop your leadership and employability skills we also provide opportunities to

  • become student ambassadors at open days and campus events
  • run clubs and societies
  • have a student voice by becoming course representatives
  • complete part-time work with Sheffield Hallam or local companies through our Careers and Employment Service
Accreditations

Professionally accredited courses

We offer 324 courses with accreditation or approval from 59 professional bodies.

Where appropriate our courses are also endorsed by industry partners.
