The Department of Teacher Education

Welcome to the Department of Teacher Education website.

We're one of the biggest teacher education departments in the country. We cover the full range of teaching, from primary, early years and secondary to post-16 education and training, plus continuing professional development for those already in the job.

We offer several routes into teaching, from three-year undergraduate degrees to one and two-year PGCEs.

We have key government contracts – we're the regional lead for the innovative Teach First programme in the Yorkshire and Humber area and an integral part of the Schools Direct initiative.

We also have an active partnership with over 600 local schools and colleges.

Recent Ofsted reports have reinforced the excellent reputation of our teaching courses. And our graduates are extremely successful in gaining teaching posts. In 2012, 96% of our graduates are in teaching positions or further education within six months.

Research

Creating new knowledge is important to us. We're home to three research centres.

  • The Centre for Science Education is a research and business development unit specialising in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, but in particular, science.
  • The Centre for Education and Inclusion Research focuses on children and young people, social inclusion, learning, education and skills.
  • The Education Research Network coordinates research in education at Sheffield Hallam University. Its overarching structure works to ensure coherence and co-operation across a wide range of activities.

Opportunities for postgraduate research

As well as the long established PhD programme in education and an associated MA course of research training we offer a professional doctorate leading to the award of EdD.

We also supervise MPhil or PhD students researching full- or part-time in areas represented by the Education Research Network

These routes are all recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Industry links

Our relationships with local industry, government organisations and educational bodies is integral to our work. For example, we designed the innovative Climate Futures curriculum resource for the STEM initiative in collaboration with the Comino Foundation.

But it’s our partnership with schools that's the cornerstone to effective training of our future teachers.

We have forged strong partnerships with schools and colleges in the region and have effective links with local education authorities and subject associations.

Our mentor development networks allow colleagues in partner schools to review and help develop our courses. And our outreach and recruitment activities help keep our training up to date.

We're aligned with the government's national partnership for the Children's and Young Peoples Workforce Strategy to raise the quality of teacher training.

International links

Our international connections are becoming an integral part of our work. We have a developing portfolio of placements and field trips for teacher trainees and have the opportunity to take part in placements and exchanges as part of their course.

We share ideas and strategies with partners around the globe. We delivered the first ever Malta Primary Science Conference to over 120 Maltese primary school teachers.

At present we have 11 Erasmus agreements in countries including Belgium, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Netherlands and Turkey. Erasmus is the European Community programme for higher education and forms part of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme, supporting cooperation between the universities of 33 countries and encouraging staff and student mobility for work and study.

Facilities

As well as specialist resource rooms, laboratories, workshops and studios we have dedicated spaces for teaching and learning. For example, we have a mock primary classroom and two science labs with the same equipment used in schools.

You prepare for school by learning to use the latest technology such as electronic whiteboards and digital recording equipment. Our knowledgeable technicians are always on hand to help.

And when you're on placement, you can access course materials, tutors and fellow trainees through our virtual learning environment and e-learning system.
