Call for papers - Critical Autism Seminar Day

This free seminar day, co-hosted by Sheffield Hallam University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Disability Research Forum, brings together an international group of researchers and calls for papers that will address diverse issues including

  • deconstructing pathologies and 'abnormalities'
  • concepts of fear and fascination
  • exploring neurodiversity
  • autism as/and celebrity
  • 'autism industries' and the commodification of impairment

The keynote speaker will be Anne McGuire, from the Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (Canada). Anne's doctoralresearch analyses the social significance and productive effects of cultural representations of autism produced and circulated by individuals and collectives engagedin autism advocacy in the contemporary West.

  • Deadline for attendance: 6 January 2011

Our aim is for this conference to be as inclusive as possible. We welcome activists, undergraduate and postgraduate students, practitioners and academics to join us.

In the spirit of an eco-friendly day, registered delegates will be sent an e-pack.

As the conference is free, lunch and refreshments will be available for purchase at the University. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements so we can inform the catering outlets.

Leighton View have put together a five-a-side disability team to play in a disability league in Sheffield.

New adult social group

Are you an adult with Asperger syndrome? Would you like the opportunity to meet with others with Asperger syndrome to socialise and share experiences?

The Sheffield Autistic Society is starting a new monthly adult group starting in June at Sheffield Hallam University, Arundel Building, Charles Street, Sheffield S1 2NE.

Acctivate clubs for children and teenagers

Asperger's Children and Carers Together (ACCT) is now running free, fortnightly sessions for both children and teenagers at Autism plus, Coleridge Centre, Tinsley Park Road, Sheffield S9 5DL
