Housing, social and economic regeneration and labour markets
There are currently 14 PhD students at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) studying a diverse range of topics within CRESR's broad areas of expertise.
CRESR draws on the expertise of staff with national and international reputations to engage with current policy agendas. Its aim is to maintain its role in forging the policy agenda at regional, national and international levels by
- consolidating its position as one of the country's top interdisciplinary research centres
- working with policy makers and practitioners to address problems and offer practical and innovative solutions
- applying multiple methodologies from across the social sciences
- developing and contributing to academic debates
- retaining and developing staff who offer a range of generic and specialist skills
- developing new work in related and growing areas of policy and practice
CRESR works with central and local government clients, development agencies, regeneration partnerships, charitable trusts, and research bodies to deliver high quality and cost effective research, advisory and consultancy services.
As a postgraduate student in CRESR, in addition to one-to-one meetings with supervisors, you benefit from participation in the monthly 'PhD forum' which is run by Ryan Powell. The purpose of the PhD forum is to generate discussion about social theory, research methodology and the practicalities of PhD study in a way that is directly focused on your topic of investigation. This supports the one-to-one supervisory relationship by providing you with ideas that you can discuss in supervision sessions.
Some students are supported/funded by external organisations.

Masters courses
CRESR does not offer Masters courses. However, if you are on an ESRC funded ‘one plus three studentship’ you undertake the ESRC accredited Social Sciences Research Methods.
