Humanities Research
The Humanities Research Centre brings together the work of English, film studies and history and is based at City Campus. The research centre supports the research funding, strategy and development of the three humanities areas.
Our English area has a strong research profile. In the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) we gained a grade 3a rating and a grade 4 rating in RAE 2001. In the RAE 2008 Quality Profile system, 85% of our research was rated as internationally recognised and above, and we doubled our research income.
The History department has a well-developed research environment. All staff entered the 2008 RAE, and 80% of outputs were of international standing.
As a research student, you take taught modules in research training alongside MA students. It is possible to transfer in either direction between research and taught Masters degrees or progress from either to PhD.
We offer research opportunities within the following main themes
- English - creative writing
- English - eighteenth-century and romantic writing
- English - linguistics
- English - the Renaissance
- English - contemporary and modern literature
- Film and television in Britain and Europe
- History - economic and business history
- History - social and political studies
