A regular programme of events and seminars provides opportunities for researchers to present and discuss their work. They are regarded as an essential part of the research student experience.
Funding of a research degree programme is always a challenge. Regrettably, funding of research degrees is in short supply and therefore very competitive. Most students who are working on their research part-time while in paid employment are able to support themselves. As far as full-time degrees are concerned there are several other possible sources of funding
- the University or Faculty itself is sometimes able to offer bursaries in specific subject areas
- the Student Loans Company does not cover postgraduate study, but it may be possible to get a Career Development Loan where the programme is very clearly vocationally relevant. See Direct.gov.uk for further information.
- it may be possible to take out a bank or building society loan to cover some of the expense of a research degree
- some charities or educational trusts may consider requests for funding. The Prospects website may help you begin an investigation of this possibility.
- if you have a Sheffield Hallam University undergraduate degree you may be entitled to a 10 per cent reduction in postgraduate fees
