The Department of Allied Health Professions

Welcome to the Department of Allied Health Professions website.

Part of the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, we're renowned as one of the UK's leading centres of health education.

We were chosen by the Department of Health as one of 14 pilot sites for modernising education and training for allied health professions.

And in partnership with the University of Sheffield, we're leading the UK sector in delivering distance learning radiotherapy education, as one of four Department of Health Leading Edge Sites for Common Learning.

The department provides education and training for six different allied health professions. Our pre-registration awards are approved in the UK by the Health Care Professions Council, and our post-registration awards and continuing professional development (CPD) provision are recognised by professional colleges and councils.

Interprofessional learning

All our courses include interprofessional modules, where you're taught alongside students from the other allied health professions, as well as nursing, midwifery and social work students.

This kind of teaching reflects the way the different health professions work together in the real world.

Our interprofessional modules are delivered by a multi-professional team of lecturers, and backed up with a range of digital learning resources such as case study scenarios, virtual communities and e-lectures.

Facilities

You spend much of your time on our courses on placement or in your own work setting. But when you're on campus, the equipment is just as advanced – if not more so. From a mock operating theatre to an x-ray suite, we can accurately recreate the workplace on campus.

Our specialist facilities include

  • the new Primus BTE
  • Toshiba Viamo ultrasound
  • i4Motion and new pressure plates
  • an immersive environment simulation suite
  • an action learning group space

Research

The Centre for Health and Social Care Research applies leading research and new technologies to help prevent long term health and social care problems.

The Centre is advancing the treatment, rehabilitation and self-care of people who are particularly at-risk. Work focuses on a range of long term conditions, including stroke, cardio-vascular disease, cancers, learning disabilities, mental health and muscular skeletal conditions.

International links

Our international connections are an integral part of all aspects of our work. Our staff collaborate with colleagues in a variety of locations, including institutions in Canada, Chile, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Malaysia, Malta, South Africa, Sweden and the USA.

Our students come from all over the world. Most of our MSc Applied Physiotherapy students come from India. We are developing a diploma in anaesthetics for doctors in Iraq. And through our distance learning radiotherapy courses we're teaching students based in 16 different countries.

Wellness clinic

We run a programme dedicated to increasing health and wellbeing among staff and external clients of the University. Delivered by the physiotherapy team and the Centre for Exercise and Sport Science, the scheme has reduced absenteeism and improved individual and team performance.

We also offer physiotherapy services to staff, students and external clients. These include hands-on treatment, ergonomic assessments, workplace assessments and functional rehabilitation, making the most of the expertise in the faculty.

Our occupational therapy and physiotherapy teams play a key role in delivering the services to improve the health and social care of our staff and students.
