Living costs

Accommodation will be your main living cost. Luckily, Sheffield is not an expensive place to live. Some typical figures for a year's accommodation are available from our accommodation office.

Sheffield is a vibrant place to live, with more than 40,000 students in the city. It's always been a welcoming place, so there's no surprise that it's one of the most in demand student destinations in the UK.

Students are valuable to the local economy, so many shops, services, pubs, restaurants and recreational activities offer student discounts and special rates. Sheffield has a legendary reputation for nightlife. Nearly every night of the week you'll find clubs offering student nights with amazing deals on admission prices and drinks.

For the limited student income the city has, as well as the usual supermarket complexes, a range of budget supermarkets including Netto, Aldi and Lidl, and all other supermarkets usually stock economy ranges.

Sheffield is also a green city - over a third of the city actually falls within the Peak District National Park - so you'll be next door to some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. The Peak District offers challenging rock-climbing, scenic walks and beauty spots which can be enjoyed for free.

Living expenses can vary from student to student. Remember, how much you spend will depend on your lifestyle.

You will need to budget for other expenses such as food, travel, clothes and toiletries, as well as any additional study costs. These will depend on the subject you are studying and can include books, stationery, photocopying, field trips and specialist materials or equipment.
