Africa (Sub-Sahara)
We welcome students, businesses and academic partners from Africa, and we look forward to you becoming part of our exciting University community.
Sheffield has an established African community who have come from countries including Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Liberia.
Sheffield is a vibrant, modern and safe UK city offering a low cost of living, great heritage, a variety of international restaurants and specialist supermarkets selling halal food. It also has a range of Afro-Caribbean stores and community centres.
A growing number of students from Africa are choosing to study in Sheffield with us. This September we have awarded 14 scholarships ranging from £1,000 to £10,000 to students from the region.
We have a dedicated office based in Nigeria and a network of recruitment agents throughout the region providing guidance on the study in the UK, the University and our courses. For more information visit the Nigeria web page.
We are a founding member of the Northern Consortium (NCUK) which delivers courses around the world.

Dr Christine Ferris
Principal lecturer (diagnostic radiography) and international business manager for the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing
I would advise anyone wishing to study at Sheffield Hallam University to research their chosen course of study carefully and identify how it will help in their chosen career pathway.
-
Elaine Brookes
Assistant Dean, Academic and Portfolio Development, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing
My advice to students would be to be very clear about the subject you wish to study and contact us directly if you have any doubts.
-
David Graham
Principal lecturer in hospitality management and international business development for Africa and the Middle East
My advice to students is bring or buy warm clothing and be prepared for the cold weather. Organise your time so that you are able to engage with the reading that your tutor gives you, always make notes of texts that you have read and write down the reference for future use…… you will never remember where it came from.
-
Nicola Dennis
International marketing manager
My advice would be to find a course which is focused on industry needs and what is required in the work place to really support your career development. When you are here make use of our location and see as much of the UK as possible.
-
Elaine Millington
International development administrator
My role is to provide support to the recruitment and marketing teams for travel, incoming visits and agent liaison. I also support the scholarship programme within International Development.
My advice would be to remember to prepare well for the cultural changes when you come to the UK, especially think about the differences in our food and the weather. Also remember to apply for your scholarship before the deadline.

MSC Engineering and Management
The best thing about Sheffield is the low cost of living compared to other UK cities. The people are very friendly and there is always someone to help you. It is a great environment for study and the University's facilities are excellent. The International Student Support Team helped me get my visa extension and I also used netWORK to find a part-time job. All these services have made me feel more confident and valued as a student.

Gideon Nimako, Ghana
MSc Computer and Network Engineering
All through my applications and admissions, Sheffield Hallam was the first to offer assistance and replies – both the international and admission teams make you feel you are a valued individual….Student and Academic Services, Accommodation Services and the International Office all helped me to settle in quickly. Sheffield is a wonderful place to study – it's a real student city and I've made lots of friends from different countries.
