Qualifications for entry for students from Nigeria

All of our courses require different levels of qualifications for entry and the details provided below are for guidance only.

Undergraduate programmes

Students who have completed the Nigerian OND or HND with a minimum of 'upper credit' will be considered for entry to undergraduate programmes.

Applicants who have completed the Nigerian high school leaving certificate (SSCE) will be expected to complete a recognised foundation qualification before being considered for entry to bachelor degree programmes.

Applicants who have completed the first year of an undergraduate degree at a Nigerian university may be considered for direct entry to Sheffield Hallam University undergraduate programmes.

Sheffield Hallam welcomes applications from international school students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma and those achieving 28 points or more will usually be successful in obtaining an offer of a place on our undergraduate programmes. Pre-masters programme (Graduate Diploma)

The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to pre-masters programmes

  • a degree in a subject considered unsuitable for direct entry to a master's programme - 'conversion' students
  • an OND or HND with a minimum of 'upper credit' and at least two years' relevant work experience

Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)

The following qualifications from Nigeria will be considered for entry on to postgraduate taught programmes

  • Bachelors degree from a recognised university with a minimum award of 2:2
  • successful completion of a recognised pre-masters course

Postgraduate research programmes

The following qualifications from Nigeria will be considered for entry on to postgraduate research programmes (MPhil/PhD)

  • Masters degree from a recognised university

In most cases, students are required to submit a full application for PhD study, including a formal research proposal.

The Northern Consortium (NCUK)

Please note these are requirements only for students currently studying at an NCUK centre: please see NCUK centres in Nigeria for further information.

For entry on to year one of undergraduate programmes we will consider a minimum Key Skills grade C plus between approximately 200 - 280 International Foundation Year (IFY) subject points. Please consult your centre for further guidance.

English language

All applicants are required to gain an internationally recognised English language qualification before entering a University undergraduate or postgraduate programme, such as IELTS or TOEFL. As a guideline the minimum IELTS requirement is IELTS 5.5 for pre-masters programmes, and IELTS 6.0 for other academic programmes. Please note that some courses may have higher English language requirements.

For Nigerian applicants, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) SSCE in English language with a minimum score of C6 is accepted in place of IELTS/TOEFL as evidence of English language proficiency.
