What you can study on exchange at Sheffield Hallam University

You can study modules in the Faculty that has the exchange agreement with your home institution. For example students from ESPEME Business School can study with our Sheffield Business School and select modules such as marketing, international relations, accounting etc.

You cannot select modules from another Faculty.

For all module information you need to contact your Department of International Development and ask to see the Sheffield Hallam University information pack for exchange students.

In addition there are two modules which are open to all exchange students and are very popular. If you are interested in either of these modules you should include them on your learning agreement

English for Academic Purposes

This 20-credit module is for students whose level of English is already good. The module develops your knowledge of spoken and written English for academic purposes. It introduces you to British academic culture and study skills. You also develop a greater awareness and understanding of modern-day Britain, its people, society, culture and traditions through course tasks and assignments.

For further information contact the TESOL Centre.

British Life and Culture

This module is specifically designed for international and exchange students. It offers an introduction to aspects of British culture and provides an opportunity to reflect on and compare the differences and similarities between cultures. You will look at aspects of life in Sheffield and Britain and learn more about subjects such as media, politics, heritage, traditions, music and food. There will be guest speakers and you will be encouraged to visit local places of interest.

For further information contact the module leader Judith Rossiter by e-mail j.rossiter@shu.ac.uk

How many modules can I take?

All modules at Sheffield Hallam University carry credit which indicates the workload attached to the module. Most modules carry 20 CATS (10 ECTS) credits but some are less than this.

If you are here for

  • a full year then you will take 120 CATS (60 ECTS) credits
  • a semester then you will take 60 CATS (30 ECTS) credits
  • a term then you will take 40 CATS (20 ECTS) credits

Exchange students in some subject areas, such as engineering and fine art, undertake a supervised research project rather than following taught modules while they are at Sheffield Hallam.

For further information about this you should contact your Faculty exchange co-ordinator.
