European trips

When you complete your studies at Sheffield Hallam University you may wish to visit mainland Europe. On arrival in the UK we will invite a number of independent and reputable Europe tour operators to our market place event, to provide information about the packages available. For your personal safety and protection of your travel funds you are strongly advised to book with one of these companies.

The University will only permit travel agencies that are members of ABTA The Travel Association to advertise through our student information events and publications. ABTA is the travel association for UK based tour operators and travel agencies. More information about its protection is available at www.abta.com/home. You should however always ask your travel company if protection applies to your travel arrangements.

You are strongly encouraged to take our personal travel insurance for the duration of your Europe trip.

Europe letter

Before you depart on your European trip it is wise to obtain a letter from the University that confirms you are a student here and you are returning to the UK to collect your luggage. It may be difficult for you to re-enter the UK at the end of your trip without this letter. You can find out more about this process when you arrive in the UK but you should be aware, that following problems with unregulated tour companies, the University is introducing new rules on issuing a re-entry letter.

You are free to choose any agency to arrange your trip or make arrangements for independent travel. The University will only issue a letter to help you re-enter the UK at the end of your trip where either,

  • the package tour has been booked with a travel agency that is an ABTA member with public liability insurance
  • if you wish to travel independently, you can show evidence of sufficient valid personal travel insurance for the booking and duration of the trip

Wales/Scotland weekend trips

Many of our students plan trips to Wales or Scotland during the summer. While some students decide to make their own way, it is advisable to book an organised tour with a reputable travel agency. The University invites a number of travel agents to the Marketplace event including

These companies are totally independent from the University, but offer a fully insured tour with detailed itinerary.

It is very important that any trips you plan do not clash with lectures or exams.
