Top quality teaching and research

Our academic staff are leaders in their field and carry out national and international research projects at the forefront of innovation and development. We are renowned for the quality of our applied research and have one of the highest levels of research-generated income of any new UK university. We have 12 subject areas rated as excellent by the National Assessment Body.

We have a broad portfolio of research across 21 research centres and eight research groups. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise 2008, our research activity has been rated as follows

  • 96 per cent of our research to be of national standard
  • 8 per cent gained the top rating of 4*, meaning the quality is world leading
  • 68 per cent was rated as international quality
  • Sheffield Hallam are placed sixth for research quality and volume compared with all other modern universities
