Applying for a job at Sheffield Hallam University
Please read this information carefully before filling in your application.
Job description and person specification
The job description tells you the main purpose and key duties of the role, and gives you an outline of what to expect when carrying out the job.
The person specification lists the skills, competencies, attainment, attributes and experiences you need to carry out the role effectively. We use the person specification to decide whether you're suitable for the post.
The evidence column tells you when we'll look for the evidence that you meet the criteria (for example on the application form, at the interview, via a presentation).
Application form
In the first stage of the process you complete a Sheffield Hallam University job application form. A link to the form can be found on the job advert. Please complete all relevant sections, following the instructions on the form.
You must be able to show that you have all the "essential" criteria (those marked with an "E") in order for your application to be shortlisted. If you also have any of the "desirable" criteria (marked with a "D") please give evidence of this as well.
Further/other information in support of application
This is the section of the application form where you write about your experience, skills, knowledge, attributes and abilities that relate to the role. This information should clearly show how you meet the requirements stated in the person specification.
- Be as concise and relevant as possible.
- You can include experience and skills you've gained in and out of paid employment.
- Try to put your answers in a logical order (for example the order that the criteria appear on the person specification) so it's easy to read.
- Please note – we don't accept CVs instead of application forms. For some very senior positions we will accept CVs in addition to application forms. If so we'll state this on the application.
Attribute frameworks
Attributes focus on how tasks are achieved, not just what is achieved. Attribute frameworks describe the kind of behaviour that will lead to you being successful at the job.
If you're asked to show you have specific attributes from a particular attribute framework, this will be stated in the person specification. Use the 'Attributes' section of the application form to give a concise example showing when you have demonstrated this behaviour.
When giving your example, remember to describe the context, the situation you were faced with, what action you took, and the result and impact of your action. Focus on what you did rather than what your team or colleagues did.
Next stages
If your application is shortlisted, we'll contact you with the details of the next stage in the process. This is usually an interview but might include some other assessment activity (such as an in-tray exercise, a practical test or a presentation).
We'll tell you when and where the selection event will be held and ask you to bring proof of your right to work in the UK.
Thanks for your interest in working for Sheffield Hallam University, and good luck.
