Journalism student awarded with scholarship
Sheffield Hallam University launched the new India Office in New Dehli on 17 July 2008. To celebrate this we awarded one full tuition fee scholarship to a successful Indian applicant for a 2008/9 postgraduate course. Successful applicants had to meet the same criteria for the International Achievement Scholarship.
Siva Sankar Yeleswarapu was chosen for the scholarship due to his outstanding professional achievements. He worked for a number of well-known and established Indian publications including the Deccan Chronicle, the Economic Times and rediff.com (one of India's biggest websites). Siva was invited to the VIP event to launch the India Office at the Imperial Hotel in Delhi on 17th July where he received his certificate from our Vice Chancellor Professor Philip Jones.
'On receiving the scholarship, I feel grateful, supported, lucky, anxious and challenged, all at the same time. The scholarship was announced at a time when I was about to call off my efforts to realise one of my dreams (to pursue higher education in the UK) for want of adequate funds.' says Siva.
He adds 'Despite growing cynicism about mass media and perceived degradation of values in newsrooms the world over, I still believe journalism retains the potential to be a noble profession that can make a real difference to people’s lives directly and indirectly. I am confident that the UK education system will help me to hone my skills further so as to serve my home country effectively, where mass media are expected to ride the recent explosive growth to reach global standards.'
'Following on from this course, I want to continue strengthening myself as a multi-skilled journalist who can meet the needs of, and the challenges at, digital-age global media organisations (where print, online, broadcast and new media skills and international experienceare sought for inergrated multi-media editorial operations.)'
Siva Sankar Yeleswarapu, MA International Broadcast Journalism
