Two final year hospitality students from Sheffield Hallam University have scooped joint top prize in a prestigious national hospitality award, after completing international work placements.
The annual competition, called 'Young Guns student of the year', held in London, saw 10 student finalists battle it out over a 'board room' style lunch for the top spot.
Final year Sheffield Hallam students Ben Cook and Holly Dixon jointly lifted this year's award which was judged by experts in their industry, including the chief executive of the Institute of Hospitality, Peter Ducker.
The students, who needed to network with high profile members of the hospitality industry to win the awards, have been able to broaden their industry knowledge and develop work based learning skills in global hospitality establishments.
Ben Cook, 23, originally from Derby, who spent his year-long work placement at the Old Toad restaurant in Rochester, New York state, USA said: "My placement year in New York state was a beneficial experience that I can now apply to the rest of my study at University. It has given me insight into where I want to work in the future and it has broadened my skillset for the future.
"It's great to be awarded with the high-status Young Guns award and it has now provided me with confidence for my career in hospitality."
Joint first place winner Holly Dixon, 22, originally from Tamworth in Staffordshire, whose placement year was at Flemings Hotel in London's Mayfair, said: "I'm so happy to have received this award. It's been an invaluable experience working at Flemings Hotel and it's great to get recognised for the hard work I have put in throughout the placement.
"It's a great way to end my time at Sheffield Hallam and I am now looking forward to working in the hospitality industry."
The judging panel said: "Both winners displayed exceptional leadership throughout their placement year, going above and beyond their specific roles.
"They impressed the judging panel in their confidence, professionalism and commitment to the hospitality industry where they are keen to make a difference."
The 'Young Guns' award is run by the Council for Hospitality Management Education.
