One of the world's leading sociologists will be exploring the 'dark side' of voluntary organisations as part of a series of lectures to mark the 15th anniversary of Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Voluntary Sector Research (CVSR).
David Horton Smith, who has a PhD from Harvard University and is research and emeritus professor of sociology at Boston College, USA, will talk about how misconduct and abuse within non-profit organisations is often overlooked in the voluntary sector and will draw upon his research spanning over 50 years in the field.
The free, public lecture, titled 'Misconduct in voluntary organisations: cases, risk management and prevention' takes place on Thursday 13 June and will be the third in a series of talks to celebrate 15 years of operation at CVSR.
The fourth and final presentation around the impact of celebrity endorsement on charitable events and campaigns will be led by the director of fundraising for Sparks Medical Research Charity, Sean Kelly.
Sean, who is a Sheffield Hallam charity resource management graduate, will close the anniversary commemorations on 27 June by drawing on his practical experiences of working with celebrity endorsements as well as his findings from his masters dissertation on what motivates celebrities to support third sector organisations.
Professor Gareth Morgan, leader of CVSR, said: "I am delighted to be able to acknowledge the anniversary with such prestigious speakers.
"The CVSR has been involved in some major programmes of research over the years, looking at the developments of charity legislation and Government programmes for support of the voluntary sector, especially those providing public services. I am looking forward to seeing what the next 15 years will bring."

Notes for editors:
The centre was founded in 1998 to bring together key interest in the voluntary sector in two different parts of the University. Over the years the work has expanded considerably, and now includes 15 core members spread across all four faculties of the University.
