The region's footballers of the future got an early Christmas gift when Sheffield Hallam University rehoused the floodlights from its Bawtry Road sports ground with a local football club.
As part of the University's £5million project to redevelop sports facilities at its Bawtry Rd site, new international standard floodlights will be installed to replace the existing ones. Still in excellent working order, the original lights will be moved to local grassroots community club, Dronfield Town FC, in May 2013 in readiness for the new football season.
To celebrate the move, this week several Sheffield Hallam sport students went along to meet and train with Dronfield Town FC's Under 8s and seniors teams.
Dan Porter, head of sport services at Sheffield Hallam said: "With the development of international standard pitches and floodlights taking place at Bawtry Road, we wanted to find a sustainable, green solution to replacing the lights, so getting a local club to take them seemed like the perfect solution. We're delighted that the many teams at Dronfield Town will be able to benefit from these lights from next season."
Darren Bradwell from Dronfield Town FC said: "We are delighted that Sheffield Hallam University has given us the opportunity to reuse these floodlights. To have had to purchase these new would have meant a lot more fundraising and time before we could realise our ambitions.
"Now these lights will enable us to achieve our goal of providing the opportunity for all the girls and boys in our club to play football for their local club at a very high standard."
The redevelopment of the University's Bawtry Road sports facilities aims to improve participation in competitive and recreational sport, both for Sheffield Hallam students and the wider community. It includes the development of high quality Rugby, Football and flexible 3G all-weather pitches along with a brand new pavilion with changing rooms, bar and views across the site. It will be complete in September 2013.
The project is part of the University’s sport strategy which aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity at all levels leading to healthier lifestyles.
