Academy Award-nominated costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis is making an exclusive visit to Sheffield Hallam University to share the secrets of a 30-year career creating outfits for a generation of screen legends.
Deborah Nadoolman Landis PhD is Director of David C. Copley Center for Costume Design at UCLA and senior guest curator of Hollywood Costume, a major exhibition taking place at London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
In her one and only public appearance outside of London, she will talk about the exhibition and her career highlights at an ‘In Conversation’ event at the University's Pennine Theatre on Tuesday, 11 December.
Married to famous Hollywood director John Landis, Deborah's costume design credits include Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Trading Places and Coming to America for which she was nominated for an Academy Award.
She most recently designed costumes for the period comedy Burke & Hare (2010) and has also published several books about Hollywood costume design.
Hollywood Costume, which launches at the V&A on 20 October, gathers together more than 100 of the most iconic costumes designed for unforgettable cinema characters over a century of film-making - from The Wizard of Oz, and Gone with the Wind to 2012 releases The Dark Knight Rises and Anna Karenina.
She said: “This landmark exhibition will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the most beloved characters in Hollywood history and gain insight on the role of the costume designer and their vital contribution to cinema storytelling.”
Deborah's free In Conversation event, which begins at 7pm, is part of a packed Autumn programme of events at Sheffield Hallam.
Actor and theatre director Richard Wilson will be In Conversation on Wednesday 17 October and acclaimed playwright John Godber will take to the stage on Tuesday 6 November, both as part of the 2012 Off The Shelf festival.
