Ryan has researched exclusion and urban sociology, looking at the stigmatisation of 'outsider' groups and the governance of behaviour. His research focuses on the way in which the state and society responds to such groups including Gypsy-Travellers, other peripheral minorities, welfare recipients and those depicted as 'deviant' by society. His research also seeks to understand attempts to change and control the conduct of groups deemed in need of 'corrective treatment'.
