Sheffield Hallam University is the region's second ranking non-profit employer of graduates, according to a new independent study, which is based on data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

The Complete University Guide has ranked Sheffield Hallam at joint eighth position in the Yorkshire and the Humber - the highest position of any educational institution in the region.

Paul Helm, who leads on student employability at the University, said: "We encourage our students to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviour that will enable them to respond to a changing economy. 88 per cent of our graduates are in work or further study within six months of graduating."

Graduates are in a range of support roles at Sheffield Hallam, across a number of departments and faculties, including Pre-Enrolment Services, public relations, Student and Learning Services, the Materials and Engineering Research Institute, Secretary and Registrar's Directorate, and the faculty of Development and Society.

The Complete University Guide survey asks UK and EU domiciled leavers what they are doing on a particular reference date roughly six months after graduation. Sheffield Hallam had taken on 20 graduates during the timeframe.

Notes for editors:

The Complete University Guide table on graduate employers in the Yorkshire and Humber region can be found here.

The Complete University Guide tables were compiled using data taken from the Annual Survey (2010-11) conducted by HESA. This asked all graduates to supply information about their employment status within six months of leaving university. The Complete University Guide tables include only full-time, first-degree leavers who entered full-time, paid graduate-level employment. Graduates in medicine, dentistry and nursing have been excluded.
