Projects to improve the university experience for international and disabled students at Sheffield Hallam University have been shortlisted for two national education awards.
Sheffield Hallam's Admissions Services, Directorate of International Development (DID) and Disabled Student Support teams have today (Thursday 18 April) been announced as finalists of the prestigious Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2013.
The recognition for Admission Services and DID follows a year-long project which saw the redevelopment of Sheffield Hallam's IT systems to make the application and enrolment process for international students more efficient.
The team has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Student Admissions Team award after the project was rolled out in the University's overseas offices in Beijing and Delhi last summer. It will be introduced into offices in Malaysia and Nigeria later this year.
The project has already proved effective after Sheffield Hallam saw a 27% rise in the number of enrolments from China alone in September 2012.
Nicola Rawlins, head of pre-enrolment services at Sheffield Hallam, said: "We have revolutionised our admissions process delivered in our overseas offices and our working relationships with our international colleagues have improved significantly.
"It would often take days for a student record to be processed or updated due to the time difference but now we all have the same level of access to the university's systems, we have a more efficient way of working.
"I'm delighted that all of our hard work has paid off and has been recognised in this way."
Sheffield Hallam's Disabled Student Support Team is also on the shortlist, in the Outstanding Student Services category. They have been recognised for their partnership work with other higher education institutions, national disability organisations and local schools and colleges to ensure disabled students have enough support and information to aspire them to enter higher education.
Disabled student ambassadors were employed to talk about their own experiences and short films were produced to showcase life at Sheffield Hallam.
Sarah Smart, Head of the Sheffield Regional Assessment Centre, said: "We want to raise the aspirations of potential disabled students and provide them with the confidence they need to apply for university. I am pleased that this nomination recognises the work undertaken by the university to provide a smooth transition from further education to higher education for our disabled students."
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in June.
