This course

This is a one year top up degree. It enables you to build on your existing qualifications to gain an honours degree.

Biotechnology is a rapidly developing, multidisciplinary field that is underpinned by topics such as molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and microbiology.

This course develops your understanding of these topics. You apply your knowledge and skills to areas such as molecular biotechnology, bioremediation, plant biotechnology and bioinformatics.

Your studies include
• the application of biotechnology to developing treatments for serious diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disease
• how we use microorganisms in bioremediation, such as bacteria to clean oil spills
• how biotechnology affects society
• plant biology in the molecular world
• analytical, reflective and critical thinking for scientists

The course has a strong laboratory focus and you develop skills in the latest practical techniques. Lab work in our modern and well-equipped facilities makes up a significant amount of your time.

A strong theme of professional development is also embedded in the course to enhance your growth as a scientist and improve your employability.
