This course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS). It will appeal if you are a higher level teaching assistant or other teaching assistant and you have a foundation degree.
The course gives you the skills and knowledge to be an effective teacher.
You study the teaching of English, mathematics and science as well as developing your own subject knowledge of these areas.
As you progress through the course, you develop your understanding of and teaching across the primary stage curriculum.
You are taught in small groups throughout the two years of this course.
In the first year you are introduced to the core curriculum areas of mathematics, English and science, as well as inclusion and creativity. You also prepare for professional practice. All of this work is related to Key Stage 1.
In the second year you continue your studies of the core subjects of maths, English and science and complete further work on inclusion and creativity. These are within Key Stage 2.
You complete a full-time school-based experience. This involves a six week placement in a Key Stage 1 setting in a school which is new to you.
In the second year you complete another six week placement in a Key Stage 2 setting.
There are also specialist one week placements in both year one and year two, and the opportunity to attend conferences with other degree students.
Support from your employing school is essential to successfully complete this course. You have to meet all the standards as specified by the Department for Education Teaching Agency to be recommended for qualified teacher status.
