Module descriptions

Critical thinking and research
This module allows you to understand and evaluate the issues involved in developing and undertaking assignment research and writing activities. You develop skills in learning, research, communication, reflective practice and analysis. You apply these approaches and techniques in your own assignment work.

Strategic marketing and planning
You focus on the nature and importance of marketing strategy in fast moving markets. You consider how an organisation’s competitive advantage might be developed and exploited in a cost-effective way through the planning process. This equips you with the skills and mindset required to manage marketing strategically in a global context.

Finance
This module equips you with the necessary skills to make financial decisions at a strategic level, and apply appropriate performance measurement systems to the strategic management process.

Strategic management in action
This module introduces you to the nature of the strategic challenges facing organisations in complex and global markets. It provides a thorough grounding in the essential principles and practices for strategy. The module forms a fundamental framework to integrate other elements of the course.

Innovation in the digital enterprise
This module explores the current and emerging technologies, standards and infrastructures that provide the opportunity for new business models which generate revenue and reduce costs.

Global business

Technology, the internet, expanding international trade relations, improved transportation and communication have produced a new global competitive business environment. This module provides you with a thorough understanding of the international business environment and the impact that globalisation is having on organisations and their management.

Managing organisations and people
Organisations are increasingly recognising people as their most important asset. This module provides an essential and critical introduction to organisational theory and its influence on human resource management issues. It will equip you with the skills to improve your organisation’s effectiveness and your own management of people.

Leadership and strategies for change
This module provides a critical perspective of leadership theory and its influence on change management issues. It encourages you to develop a personal approach to leadership and change through a critical understanding of the way organisations are developed and managed.

Consultancy project (optional module)
This module gives you the opportunity to take part in a consultancy project for a client as part of a team and reflect on the consultancy process

Operations management (optional module)
This module looks at how organisations can best manage their resources to produce products and services effectively and efficiently. You gain an overview of the key issues in this area such as quality management, supply chain management and business process management.

Dissertation
Your dissertation is based on analysis and development of an issue associated with management, using suitable research methodology, theory and literature relevant to the issues under investigation. Drawing on knowledge developed throughout your MBA studies and your own experiences of management, the dissertation allows you to explore and analyse business problems through a critical and reflective approach to research.

Recent examples include • a study of employee relations and motivation • an analysis of appropriate strategic planning • a review of the components of service quality – in each case related to a specific organisation, though this is not a requirement. The range of possibilities is enormous. It would be helpful to have an idea in mind from your own experience at the outset of the course.

Assessment

Assessment includes individual • written work • portfolio assessment • group presentations
