• Meet Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration requirements.
• Benefit from well-equipped radiography teaching facilities that include an X-ray room.
Designed for qualified diagnostic radiographers and radiological technologists who have little or no postgraduate clinical experience, this modular course allows you to advance your practice by updating it with practical knowledge, supported by a strong evidence base.
This course is also suiable if you are
• a diagnostic radiographer with a gap in their professional working life who wishes to return to practice
• a new graduate who would like to continue their academic development prior to gaining employment
You learn to evaluate your practice critically through an evidence-based approach. You cater for your own professional development needs by choosing assignment topics related to your interests. We deliver the course using face-to-face teaching but the course also requires engagement and independent learning away from the classroom.
The course is structured to allow you to meet Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration requirements after completing it. It includes many skills that are required for HCPC registration, however the HCPC is a separate registering body and attending this course does not guarantee HCPC registration.
If you already have HCPC registration you may be able to complete a clinical placement in the UK health service as part of the course.
Your studies are designed to be clinically relevant to diagnostic radiographic practice both in the UK and internationally. Students come from various cultural backgrounds and bring varied experiences with them. This diversity enriches the student experience and encourages the sharing of ideas and experience, comparing and contrasting clinical experiences and backgrounds.
Sheffield Hallam has a well-equipped department including
• a functioning X-ray room
• two ultrasound machines and simulator
• digital editing suite
• ward and operating theatre clinical areas
The course is led by the diagnostic imaging team who are all registered and experienced diagnostic radiographers. The team has a wealth of international experience and specialist expertise in research, education and autonomous clinical practice.
Key research fields which the team supports are
• the history of radiology
• radiographic education
• 3D breast ultrasound
• the use of ultrasound in monitoring aneurysm size
• computer modeling
• digital imaging
• radiation protection
• protocol development
Study individual modules
As an alternative to completing the entire course, you can study individual modules from this course and gain academic credit towards a qualification. Visit our continuing professional development website for more information.
As well as being aimed at UK and international diagnostic radiographers, some of the modules are shared alongside other allied health professionals such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy. This ensures an inter-professional approach to teaching and interaction, in addition to the radiography specific modules.
