About this course

The financial services industry is a fast-paced and dynamic area to work in and this is reflected in the modules you study. The module content is constantly updated to reflect the changes that have happened and are planned for the future in the industry.

The course is for those who wish to work in banking. It has a clear focus on banking supervision but it is also relevant for those wanting to work in other areas, such as investment and financial markets.

Employers increasingly require staff to be aware of the key ethical and regulatory principles in banking. You develop knowledge in key topical debates to impress future employers.

The dissertation allows you to focus on a subject area that interests you which can contribute to your career development.

You study with students from the UK, Asia, India, Pakistan, Africa, the EU and North and Central America. This multicultural environment provides you with a great opportunity for developing mutual activities and improving cross-cultural understanding.

Course content

Semester one

Finance
You develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of finance, and the way in which financial decisions are reflected in financial statements. You develop the ability to critically evaluate and choose between alternative sources of finance. You also learn the role and application of investment appraisal techniques for companies making investment decisions.

Methods of enquiry
You gain analytical and technical research and consultancy skills. You develop knowledge and a reflective understanding of methodological and philosophical issues in research and consultancy with specific reference to finance.

Banking and financial markets
You gain a critical understanding of the functions of banking and financial markets, the factors affecting their development and key issues in the management of financial institutions and their use of financial markets.

Financial risk management
This module provides a critical understanding of the identification, measurement and management of financial risk in organisations, together with an appreciation that risk management must always be related to corporate objectives. You apply concepts and theories from relevant literature to practical situations, developing cost-effective solutions and recognising the need for an enterprise-wide approach.

Semester two

International management competencies
Competent interpersonal skills are an important characteristic for managerial effectiveness. Working in an organisation having an international dimension is made more difficult by the need to be effective in a variety of cultural environments. This module develops international management competencies relevant to functioning in international organisations.

Risk management of financial institutions
You explore the types of risk faced by financial institutions. You develop an understanding of the issues faced by financial institutions, and the techniques used to analyse and manage particular risks. You investigate the main types of risks faced by financial institutions and the techniques used to manage them.

Financial regulation and supervision
This module gives you an insight into the practical operation of the regulation and supervision of a range of financial institutions and markets. You develop the skills to perform critical analysis of the impact of financial regulation and supervision on the business operations of financial institutions. You also examine the broad nature and underlying principles of financial regulation and supervision in respect of sector-specific regimes.

Semester three

Research methods
This module develops your abilities to critically evaluate and appraise published research and develop your own research skills. It develops understanding of the nature of the postgraduate dissertation and approaches to undertaking one. On completion of the module you formulate and undertake your own research project.

Dissertation
The dissertation provides an invaluable opportunity for you to undertake a major research-based project on a topic relevant to your future career or your academic interest. It gives the opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge gained during the course and to develop research skills.

Assessment

Assessment methods include examinations, phase tests, individual assignments, group work tasks

Entry requirements

You typically need one of the following

• good honours degree (2.1) in a relevant subject
• recognised professional qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject

Relevant subjects include • business management • finance • accounting • economics • banking • law • the natural sciences • IT and computing.

We consider applicants without these academic qualifications dependant on personal, professional and work experience and other formal qualifications.

Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.

If you do not meet the above criteria you can apply for the Graduate Diploma in Business and English. After passing this diploma we automatically offer you a place on one of our business-related masters degrees.
