About this course

This course is for mathematics teachers working in all educational sectors including • primary • secondary • learning and skills. Increasingly both government and schools recognise the importance of mathematics teachers having subject-specific masters qualifications.

You develop an in depth understanding of the key issues in mathematics education which helps to inform your professional practice. This is supported by reading, discussion and reflection on the current issues in the subject area.

During the course you explore your own professional interests and relate your learning to your working practice. You develop a range of academic skills, a professional knowledge base, and employability skills that link closely to your role in mathematics education.

Completing this course can lead to career progression to more senior leadership roles in mathematics education and more widely.

If you are a primary teacher, you might consider our part-time Mathematics Specialist Teacher programme that leads to a PgCert in Primary Mathematics Education. From this starting point, after further study, you can work towards the Master in Mathematics Education qualification.

Assessment

Assessment is by course work and includes • presentations • reflective accounts • essays • research reports.

Entry requirements

You normally need
• a degree (or equivalent). We take account of your degree classification and may ask to see an example of your academic writing.
• a recognised professional qualification relevant to the course or substantial experience in the field of study

If English is not your first language, you normally need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with 6.5 in reading and 6.5 in writing. We may undertake a face to face or telephone interview to ensure your spoken language skills meet the requirements for working with learners in an educational setting.
