Key points
• Develop your current leadership skills and have them recognised in a formal qualification.
• Study around your work commitments with only 10 days attendance a year.
• Take core modules centred on the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF).
• Apply what you learn as you learn it with work-based learning modules.
Make a difference in your practice by developing your leadership and management skills on a course designed for hospital consultants or general practitioners. The course is also suitable for specialist registrars who are seeking funding and support from the deanery to develop their leadership and management skills over a one year period.
You develop your leadership skills and knowledge and gain a recognised qualification with minimal disruption to your service. All assignments are work-based to enable you to complete projects that you are already working on as a focus for your learning. To minimise your time away from your practice, years one and two requires only 10 days attendanceeach year, delivered as full-day workshops.
The course supports and encourages you to apply key theoretical concepts to work-based issues or problems and look for more effective medical management and quality improvement for patient care.
Year one addresses operational management from a medical perspective and year two covers more strategic elements of medical leadership.
Doctors take three core modules in the first year which are centred on the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF). They are
• managing people and organisations
• managing quality and effectiveness
• operations management (work-based learning)
In year two you take the module strategic medical management (work-based learning) and two option modules from
• managing change and organisational development
• commissioning in health and social care
• leading teams or managing finance
Year three is focused on an e-learning research methods module and a dissertation supervised by an academic tutor.
Independent study and work-based learning comprise the majority of your study time. Online resources and our virtual learning environment support your studies.
The course is supported by action learning sets to establish peer learning and networking amongst medical colleagues to seek innovative solutions to difficult or complex work place problems.
New networks and peer support amongst medical colleagues helps to debate and explore new leadership and management theories.
