This course is the first two years of our extended degree in engineering and mathematics. It allows you to study an engineering or mathematics degree if you do not have the usual A level or equivalent qualifications.

It is ideal for
• mature students who have been out of education for some time
• school leavers with A levels that do not include mathematics

It provides a thorough study of mathematics and basic engineering principles and associated subjects including
• engineering science (mechanical, electrical and electronic)
• mathematics
• materials
• professional skills

Most of your teaching takes place with full-time students. In the first year, your teaching takes place on one day of the week to cater for work commitments. The teaching in the second year also follows the full-time timetable but is not concentrated into one day of the week.

If you successfully complete this year, we guarantee you a place on one of our specialised engineering degrees or on the BSc (Honours) Mathematics degree.

Part-time engineering degrees include • mechanical engineering • integrated engineering • materials engineering • manufacturing engineering • electrical engineering • electronic engineering.

This course can also lead to acceptance on to our full-time BSc (Honours) Secondary Education in Mathematics with Qualified Teacher Status, subject to successful interview.

You follow the preparatory years with typically five years of study on your chosen part-time degree. As the preparatory year is part of an engineering or mathematics degree, you can claim the normal student support from your local education authority.

We teach parts of this course in partnership with Sheffield College.

We normally invite you to a course open day and interview. The interview is an informal meeting with a course or admissions tutor who will advise you of the formal offer you will get through UCAS.
