Advances in internet and web technologies, together with the arrival of mobile computing operating systems such as iOS and Android, have led to a new wave of enhanced applications that have the potential to change the way computers are used.

New application areas and software delivery systems are emerging that draw on computation and communications technologies such as distributed computing, intelligent agents and virtualisation, and cloud computing architectures.

This course covers the development and application of new mobile technologies. You build knowledge and expertise on platforms, architectures, development frameworks and the technologies for mobile applications.

It is ideal if you are

• an existing industry professional wishing to further develop your skills or to begin a career in mobile applications
• a graduate in computer science, software engineering or network programming with an interest in this area

During the course you

• gain the skills to design, develop and implement mobile applications
• learn to identify, select and integrate elements of interaction design to provide rich interaction experiences
• understand how to appraise the relevance of virtualisation and related cloud technologies for contemporary mobile computing applications
• build knowledge on current and future thinking on the integration of organisational and mobile applications
• learn to critically evaluate methods and approaches to the design, development and implementation of mobile computing applications

As well as developing your technical knowledge, the course is also designed to

• encourage you to demonstrate originality and innovation
• enhance your skills in presenting and communicating information, ideas and outcomes
• improve your ability to collaborate effectively with people with different skill sets and expertise

Towards the end of your studies, you have to complete a substantial research project, which can be based on an area of interest to you.

The rapid development and adoption of existing and emerging mobile technologies is being driven by lower computational costs and higher performance. This is creating a demand from organisations for highly skilled developers with the knowledge and ability to exploit the opportunities that are becoming available.
