Key points
• Develop a critical understanding of health care management and medical leadership methods.
• Understand global and national policy and practice in quality improvement.
• Use a range of learning methods including visits to health care organisations.
• Build a plan for innovation and improvement in health systems.

This course is designed to help you achieve an advanced-level of knowledge and skills in management and leadership, enabling you to contribute to the development of healthcare systems in your country.

The course is suitable for senior leaders and managers in health care including
• nursing and medical directors
• corporate leaders and managers
• executive leaders and directors in quality, governance and audit, patient safety and improvement
• professional and clinical leaders and managers

It is an intensive course built on contemporary theory and evidence in health care management and leadership. Evidence from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that capacity and capability in management and leadership results in improved healthcare and patient outcomes and this course is designed to meet the demand for skilled workers in health care organisations.

The course works alongside your professional background and level of knowledge of your health context and we encourage you to evaluate and review your health system and start to plan change in your health economy. For example, if you are a clinical manager or a general manager, you learn to use theoretical knowledge, research data and evidence and practice-based experience to develop as a manager and leader.

You develop a critical understanding of health care management and leadership methods and increase your understanding of global and national policy and practice in quality improvement in healthcare.

The focus of the course has been developed with key international sponsors and in consultation with at least two health care ministries. You gain international perspectives on leadership and management through participative learning methods. These include visits to health care organisations and meeting and discussing critical issues with senior leaders in the NHS.

You are encouraged to challenge existing concepts and ideas throughout your assessments, as well as reflecting on your practice. This enables you to develop an awareness of how current research and literature informs and relates to evidence-based leadership and management practice. All modules include a taught session that provides advice and guidance on how to approach the assessed work.
