Normally you need one of the following
• a degree in a design and technology-related subject plus a one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
• a degree in design and technology with education and qualified teacher status
• a bachelor of education degree in subjects now part of design and technology such as home
economics, craft design and technology, textiles
• a degree in a subject with some relation to design and technology, plus a two year PGCE (which includes one year of design and technology study)
• certificate in education in a design and technology-related subject with significant teaching experience
If English is not your first language you normally need an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
Part-time
The course consists of self-directed learning supported with some days of taught input.

The gallery offers and exciting programme of changing exhibitions of the best in art, design and creative practice. Located in the Cantor building, it hosts exhibitions throughout the year.
The Digital Design Centre
The Digital Design Centre comprises a suite of 6 IT laboratories (4 PC and 2 MAC) together with the Print Output room, an area for printing medium to large format high quality output on a range of different media. The laboratories have a wide range of software supporting 2D and 3D engineering and creative design applications.
The Digital Design Centre runs a high quality computer printing facility and has the ability to print sizes between A4 and A0 and wide format banners. A3, A2, A1, A0 and Banner photo quality printing is available on a range of papers, as well as AutoCAD type plans ( B & W ) on standard paper.
Technical support team
While you will find excellent facilities throughout, the most valuable resource you will have at your disposal is access to our extremely dedicated, highly experienced technical staff.
All the staff are there to support you during your time in the workshops. The technical team with its professionally qualified staff and practicing professionals, has a wealth of knowledge and expertise across all areas of our provision and comprises engineers, designers, silversmiths and jewellers, fine artists, media arts specialists and IT experts.
The team are committed to using their diverse range of skills and knowledge to support practical aspects of your
course work, whether solving a simple software problem, producing a complex engineering project or creating design work for an international exhibition. There are currently 50 technical staff directly supporting the Technical Resource Centres and the research institutes of the faculty.

'I was coming to the end of my NQT year and wanted the next challenge; the MA in Design and Technology Education at Sheffield Hallam was the perfect course. The three year part time structure allowed me to continue my full time teaching job as well as extend my subject knowledge and teaching and learning styles through the different modules. The university buildings are so close to the train station that it made travelling to module sessions really easy. Additional accreditation from completing modules was appealing too!
'The modules are all planned around the school year so there was time to research and plan thoroughly, implement the activity and evaluate it before the deadlines. I found it easiest to block off big chunks of time to focus on aspects of the course like the literature review and the write up. By doing a great deal of the work during half terms meant everything was fresh in my mind. Using the online library resources such as searching for journals and e-books was vital to completing assignments.
'While completing the MA I became a member of the James Dyson Foundation's Innovation Group supported by the Design & Technology Association and achieved Advanced Skills Teacher status. I genuinely believe a lot of the evidence for both of these successes came from the work I had done while at Sheffield Hallam and the impact that it had on my students and my school.
'My advice for people who are considering studying part-time would be to go for it! Make sure you are able to spend the time on it that it requires and always choose something that you are interested in. It will be difficult at times with a full time job, but it's for a relatively short period of time and overall the benefits will massively outweigh any negatives.'

'After a very long break of 15 years, I have come out from hibernation to study. I achieved one of my aspirations in 2008 by completing a Design and Technology degree at the age of 43.
'Having completed a degree in design and technology education, I wanted to develop my studies towards a potential academic career. Soon, I realized that it could be the link towards further study. Sheffield Hallam appeared to offer the best-structured MA Design and Technology Education course. Now, having completed the MA course, I can confirm this.
'Time management was fundamental. Being the breadwinner, I had strived to balance academic accountability with family responsibilities. Working in an industrial environment from Monday to Saturday did not make it easier. This meant that I had to wake up each morning at 4.00am to study before going to work. Sunday was my study day. It may sound appalling, but it may encourage other students towards an academic attainment. I mean, studying may be demanding, but it is achievable and rewarding. Moreover, I must say that my great commitment has enabled me to finish the course a year prior schedule.
'The modules Developing Electronics and Communications as well as Developing Education for Sustainable Design contributed towards my professional development and competence enhancing subject philosophy, knowledge, understanding and skills. Sustainable Design has fascinated me exceedingly and changed my approach towards doing usual things such as preparing a cup of tea at home. It also supported me in the Engineering Materials module that I lecture at the University of Malta. Managing the Design and Technology Curriculum enabled me to develop generic and specific leadership skills.
'At first, I was a bit sceptical about part-time study. However, irrespective where you come from and your way of life, it is an accessible route that directs towards academic success. Part-time study is exceptionally flexible. Let me remind you that I am only a technician and a Part time lecturer in the University of Malta. Yet, I did it, and you can do it too.'
