Modules
Effective educational leaders
This module introduces you to theory, debate and practice in educational leadership. It includes • personal leadership • leading learning, organisational analysis • developing a research interest.
Your assignment is a critically reflective account of your leadership experience to date, drawing on your interests in wider themes and issues from the literature.
Leading and managing organisational change
This module looks at the nature and implementation of organisational change. It includes • framing organisational change • implementation strategies • the role of the change agent.
Your assignment examines a change initiative from your organisational experience through a past, present or future perspective.
Collaboration, partnership and team working
This module enhances your ability to lead collaborative partnership and team working practices within or outside your setting. As an educational leader you consider the value and practical applications of key theories, concepts, models and practical tools to develop your own understanding of issues and solutions. It also focuses on coaching and mentoring. Your case study assignment blends theory with practice where you lead a team or a group collaboration or develop/manage a mentoring/coaching network.
Practitioner enquiry
This is a core rather than elective module that introduces you to the nature and process of practitioner enquiry in preparation for your masters project. It includes • reviewing literature • trialling a method • positionality in research. Your assignment is a pilot study and proposal for your major project.
Enquiry-based masters project
This module is your major project and requires you to formulate, research and carry out a major piece of enquiry into an aspect of educational leadership. It might be an implementation project or a more traditional research dissertation. The assignment is the project report.
Developing others through mentoring and coaching
In this module you develop innovative practice drawing on a wide knowledge base of mentoring and coaching literature. Your assignment is a commentary where you critically reflect on a mentoring/coaching relationship as it develops using theories, models and literature discussed in the practical sessions. The module is designed to help you to develop a deep conceptual understanding of the complexities of the mentoring/coaching process and support a much higher skill level: you practice your coaching and mentoring in each session.

'I’m really interested in leadership and management and am self-funding my masters. Initially I applied through personal interest, but I can already see benefits within my work. I want to know more, understand current issues and debates, and use this and my personal reflections to underpin my work – which is changing rapidly.
'The highlights of the course are the "aha!" moments – learning new concepts and models and applying them to my situation. It’s great having in-depth professional discussions with everyone, and being able to study something I’m really interested in a way I enjoy.
'Every time I walk out of Sheffield train station I feel really excited when I face the Sheffield Hallam buildings and think "I’m part of this!" It’s a great chance to meet others, be challenged and develop, and to learn from tutors who want the best for you – and are just as excited as I get at times! The materials and sessions are very good. You always come away feeling full up.
'This course is changing me, and changing my aspirations. I have questioned my values and those of my organisation – and this has led to me taking more of a stance in different situations, arguing more confidently, and consciously shaping my career development where I can.
'My understanding of leadership and management has developed. This has given me the knowledge to become a trainer in leadership and management for childcare managers, helped me understand what is happening by using models such as reframing and viewing the organisation under different metaphors. I now "stand outside my head" when change occurs and consider it academically as well as personally.
'Studying this course has led me to a better understanding of my personality and that of others so I understand their reactions, and that my way is not always the best way. I have been able to influence others as I have grown in confidence.
'This has been a major change and is enabling me to take my work into new fields and into exploring possibilities I could not have imagined a year ago, such as adapting to consultancy under a business model and working with heads in school improvement.'
