Course content

Doctorate modules

There are four taught modules • framing your research • research methodologies in professional education • researching pedagogical practice or researching the professional world • research designs in the educational field

You also complete a 50–60,000 word thesis on a significant topic that relates to your role and interests as a professional practitioner.

MProf in Educational Research Studies
This is a separate award that can be taken by completing the four modules from the EdD Programme along with an additional summative review, 15,000 word dissertation and oral examination.

This additional thesis requires you to review and evaluate your learning from the four EdD modules. Your review should demonstrate the development of your thinking as a potential educational researcher.

The MProf can be completed in about two years of part-time attendance. As a qualification that confirms your capacity to undertake research, the MProf would be accepted as an entry qualification for a PhD programme of research in education.

Assessment

We assess each of the four modules by coursework. This may take several forms, but will be equivalent to an assignment of 6-7,000 words. To graduate you must submit a thesis of 50-60,000 words.

Entry requirements

We normally expect you to have a relevant masters degree and significant appropriate professional experience. A key consideration is motivation and the ability to sustain in-depth study at a high level. You also need intellectual curiosity, analytical skills, and an interest in contributing to educational knowledge and improving practice.

If English is not your first language, you need an IELTS score of at least 7.0.
