We designed this course for people in full-time employment in mechanical engineering who want to work towards registration as a professional engineer.

Mechanical engineers work in all industries including • transport • communications • raw materials • energy • aerospace • brewing • mechanical equipment • pollution control.

Your career could take you into areas such as product design, development and testing or working as part of a team of design engineers. You might also find yourself working as a production engineer. Production engineers are organisers and planners, usually working with state-of-the-art, flexible manufacturing and computer-controlled facilities.

This course allows you to study part-time at the University and do one work-based learning module in your workplace each year. Your employer must agree to give you the time and technical support you need to do this work during your working week.

You study modules including

• engineering mechanics
• thermodynamics
• fluid flow
• manufacturing processes employed in industry
• relevant control and instrumentation

You also learn to use computer-aided design techniques and other computer applications of relevance to a mechanical engineer.

The work-based learning modules cover

• engineering practice and personal skills development
• investigation into a technical and commercial aspects of a product or process route at your company
• major project

After successfully completing this foundation degree, you can apply for two more years of part-time study to gain a BEng (Honours) Mechanical Engineering.

Professional Recognition

A foundation degree only provides part of the academic requirements for initial registration as a professional engineer. To achieve full accreditation you need a degree such as our BEng (Honours) Mechanical Engineering. This meets the academic requirements to register as an incorporated engineer.
